Scottsboro Electric Power Board has requested a cable franchise in unincorporated areas of Jackson County.

Jimmy Sandlin, manager of the Scottsboro Electric Power Board, addressed the Jackson County Commission Monday to request the franchise. Sandlin said the franchise would be in place in case the power board ever needs to establish facilities outside of Scottsboro.

“We don’t have any definite plans today, but there may be some partnerships develop in the future,” Sandlin said.

Sandlin said Hollywood Town Council is also reviewing a similar franchise agreement.

Sandlin said he could foresee the need to install fiber optic cable in unincorporated areas of the county in the future although there are no plans to do so at the present time.

The commission said they have signed several similar franchises and advised Sandlin to give the paperwork to John Porter, county attorney, to review and make a recommendation to the commission.

Sandlin stressed the franchise agreement would only apply to unincorporated areas of Jackson County. If the power board decided to go into another city or town, they would need to have an agreement with that council.
