Another Astroturf: MyWireless.orgPosted on September 13, 2006 - 9:44pm.
Yes it’s yet another astroturf organization planting plastic propaganda. The MyWireless.org domain is registered to a DC based non-profit via Nelson Lathrop (nlathrop@ctia.org – dns info below). CTIA.ORG is an industry group representing many telcos including Verizon (see: http://ctia.org/membership/ctia_members/index.cfm). This is a new potentially dangerous spin on HR5252 – now we have 'wireless taxes and consumers' in addition to the older ploy of 'saving consumers from high cable TV rates'. It seems the telcos have an endless pool of funds available to convince our legislators that their legislation will save 'consumers' money. from: US Newswire New Media Campaign Urges Senators to Protect More Than 200 Million American Wireless Consumers from a 'State of Separation' To: National Desk Wireless connects Americans around the country every day -- across town and across state lines, wireless connects us with our offices, our schools, our families and our world. But, hundreds of separate city and state taxes, laws and regulations threaten to pull apart our successful wireless framework -- raising prices, slowing innovation and limiting wireless choice for consumers. The new media campaign comes at a critical time, when the United States Senate is considering legislation that could change many of the laws that govern wireless services. MyWireless.org(r) is urging consumers to contact their Senators to support the Senate communications bill (H.R. 5252), in order to help keep wireless affordable and accessible for all Americans. Kimberly Kuo of MyWireless.org(r) stated, "Millions of wireless consumers face a 'state of separation' if state and local wireless taxes and regulations continue to spiral out of control. The current Senate bill reaffirms one consistent national policy for wireless services, which is critical to ensure that wireless consumers are not disconnected by scores of costly and confusing city and state taxes and rules." "The three-year tax freeze on unfair, new state and local wireless taxes in the Senate bill is extremely beneficial -- and popular -- amongst consumers. State and local governments are piling new taxes on wireless services at an alarming rate -- to cover budget shortfalls and for other non-related projects. This provision will help protect wireless consumers from even more discriminatory taxes," added Kuo. Go to http://www.MyWireless.org and register now to protect the future of wireles.
