Wednesday, April 18, 2007, 11:32 AM
By O.Kay Henderson
The feud between two media companies earlier this year that kept some Iowa basketball games off Mediacom cable systems has gotten reaction from Iowa lawmakers. Last night, the Iowa House, on a 77 to 19 vote, passed a bill that rewrites the state's cable franchise law in hopes of lowering rates for customers. UPDATE - 8:01PM CST.
Passed - 77-19. I would like to make sure that people know that this was Rep. Wise's baby and when the problems arise from this bill, we know who was the biggest pusher of this corporate handout.

SPECIAL TO THE REGISTER

Qwest can already offer cable-television service. But it wants more.
It wants to write the rules, and with state, not community, franchises.

Note: Interesting to see that the president of Qwest Iowa thinks public interest concerns such as red-lining and predatory pricing are nothing more than "bogus and irrational fears".

Cable Franchising Bill Bad for Consumers
Dubuque, Iowa, April 6.
Legislators should question the promise of more competition
A bill moving through the Iowa Legislature offers a promise tempting to lawmakers: Lower cable TV bills and more competition among providers.
If the bill actually could make good on that promise, it would be worth considering. But it can't. Neither lawmakers nor citizens should be taken in.
