Lawmakers: Bill would spur TV provider competition

(Crain’s) — Two state legislators have proposed changes to laws that they say would spur competition among pay-television service providers.

AT&T Inc. has pushed hard for the changes as it seeks to roll out its new television service in the state, but current providers object to the proposal, saying it would enable new providers to offer service only to wealthy customers, giving them an unfair advantage.

SPRINGFIELD — A battle for control of your television remote control is brewing in the State Capitol.

In an announcement Thursday, telephone giant AT&T rolled out its plan to change state law so it can begin offering television service to Illinoisans over their phone and Internet wires.

Note: AT&T continues to pursue local franchises in Missouri while also pushing for a statewide franchise.

Cable competition bill passes Senate

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Senators signed off on legislation Tuesday intended to give TV viewers more choices than their current cable and satellite companies.

The bill would make it easier for telecommunications companies such as AT&T Inc. to begin offering television service to Missourians over their phone and Internet wires. Senators passed the bill 32-2, sending the measure to the House.

AT&T secures a local franchise. Note the claim by Cathy Foraker with AT&T; "The rates for both providers tend to go down, as much as 25 percent."
